Det er vigtigt at bemærke at USA i begyndelsen af det 19. århundrede ikke var stærk nok til at stoppe Europa i at kolonisere Latinamerika... ikke endnu.
Det sluttede sent i 1800 tallet. Slå op den Cubanske krig for uafhængighed, hvor det Cubanske folk bankede den spanske koloniale regering.
Da Cuba var på kanten til at frigøre sig selv fra spansk styre, så intervenerede USA i hvad der skamfuldt fik navnet den spansk-amerikanske krig.
